This is just a short intro of how I got here in Dubai from living all my life in the Philippines. I will write about the things I love in Dubai in the next post and why 3 years after I landed, I still have never come back to the Philippines.
I first came here Christmas of 2012. It was a vacation for the whole family. I was fine with my life in the Philippines. I used to work in the BPO industry and then resigned and started my own business. Everything was ok until my brother invited us to visit Dubai and insisted that I look for a job here. I told myself no, I will live in the Philippines forever and that my friends are here and I enjoy my life here. I repeatedly told them I don’t want to go to the Middle East and be lonely because my perception of Dubai is this isolated and lonely desert in the middle of nowhere.
When we came here, everything changed. I realised that Dubai was different from what I perceived it to be. From the airport to the attractions that we went to on our almost month long vacation, I’ve told myself I want to stay here. I liked the technology, the cleanliness, the security and the diversity. Where else in the world can you see people from hundreds of nationalities staying in one place? I liked the supercars that you can see anywhere (literally, anywhere) and the fact that taxi drivers are not complaining and you just tell them where you want to go and they will take you there.
So I looked for a job, went on to interview after interview and luckily found one. It’s not the best one but I used it as a stepping stone. Everyone has to start somewhere. While many people think life in Dubai is all glamorous and fancy, I think you still have to start below and work your way to the top. You have to prove you have what it takes and then reap the rewards after. So 3 jobs and 4 exits out of the country later, I am now happily working in a publishing company and I can now say that I’m right where I want to be and I’m currently enjoying my life here in Dubai. I really do.
