Sok-woo and his daughter Soo-ahn are boarding the KTX, a fast train that shall bring them from Seoul to Busan. But during their journey, the train is overrun by zombies which kill several of the train staff and other passengers. While the KTX is shooting towards Busan, the passengers have to fight for their lives against the zombies.
First things first, it’s a korean movie meaning the language is well, korean. There were no subtitles so just like a kid watching cartoons, I was relying on the pictures. It’s funny because somehow you will grasp the idea of what’s happening in a certain scene. You can also understand the characters like who the father is, the daughter, the mother etc. I finished the movie not understanding any word but I perceived the intended meaning of the story.
Train to Busan is a great film. It was slow for the first 10-15 minutes but it easily picked up the pace after that. When the action started, it was an endless cat and mouse chase and a rollercoaster of emotions for the viewers. If you think the story is predictable, you’re wrong. I was at the edge of my seat holding my breath in anticipation of what will happen next.
The actors of course were all unknown to me. I have only seen a handful of korean movies in my life so I don’t know any of their popular actors. All I know is they all did a great job. The father and the daughter and the other supporting actors were all convincing. The villain’s acting was so impressive you would wish he would die. And I have to commend the zombies because for the most part, they scared the hell out of me. As I was watching, I was also thinking of the possibility that it will happen in real life but I hope not. They also reminded me of World War Z but this one I think is more believable.
The overall cinematography, costumes and effects were outstanding. I believe that as long as a film can make you feel like you’re part of the scene, they’ve already achieved what they wanted to achieve. I am in awe of how they made every situation plausible and a feast for the eyes. I liked the colors that they used, how the train crashes and the transition of a human to a zombie. They executed everything perfectly and I’m sure they must have put in a lot of effort for the film.
To wrap it up, yes the film is about zombies invading the city and feeding on humans but it’s not all about that. This film is one for the books and I’m sure it will be an instant classic that will be remade for the years to come. I liked it without understanding a single word and I’m sure I’ll love it had I understood what they were saying.
There are a lot to take away from this film. When you watch it, at times you’ll be happy letting out a sigh of relief as they pass through one obstacle and then you’ll feel sad because you will realize that it’s not the battle between zombies and humans. Sometimes, the war is between ourselves, humans versus humans and the survival of the fittest. It’s depressing to know that some of us will disregard the fact that we are here to help one another and not just live for ourselves. The film also shows us that no matter what happens, our loved ones will always be there for us and it’s comforting to know that some people are ready to be the ultimate sacrifice in order for their loved ones to live. This film will leave a lasting impact on you and will make you think, if there was a zombie apocalypse today, what would you do?
