Don’t Breathe ★★★★

A group of friends break into the house of a wealthy blind man, thinking they’ll get away with the perfect heist. They’re very wrong.

The film lived up to its title because for the most part, you will definitely hold your breath in anticipation of what will happen next. The story seems simple but there are so many twists that just when you thought it’s over, it’s actually not. The movie is intense and gripping that you just can’t wait for the next scene.

Set in Detroit, the movie stars three burglars and the blind veteran. It started moderately paced with a little back story to let the audience know who and what is doing which and how they all got together in the house. I commend the writers for coming up with a new idea because I know for a fact that I haven’t watched a movie that centered on a blind guy. This is refreshing and added to the fact that it’s a suspense thriller instantly makes it a classic.

Having watched the film, I can’t think of anyone else who can portray the blind guy’s character better. He was so good and believable that right after the movie, I googled if he was blind in real life. The three other stars also played their roles perfectly. One was a gangster, one was a normal guy trying to be cool and the girl was the typical rebellious mother who just wants the best for her child. They were all surprisingly good and it’s an example of a movie where you don’t need well known actors to come up with a hit. This one for sure will be because of the seamless storytelling, editing and great acting.

Jane Levy stars in Screen Gems' horror-thriller DON'T BREATHE.

When it comes to the cinematography, I do think they did a pretty good job. Although 90% of the time the setting was dark and at times it was a struggle to see what’s onscreen, I loved every second of it. They did everything correctly that you barely find any faults with this movie. The scoring also added to the terrifying experience and I was fascinated at the moments when there was complete silence that you can hear one’s breathing. It was so intense you feel like you’re inside the house with one of the characters.

Conclusively, Don’t Breathe is easily one of the best thrillers to come out in recent memory. It’s exceptional, it’s violent, it’s piercing and probably everything you wanted in a thriller. It’s non stop suspense that will have you biting your nails until the movie is over. I’m not really sure about the ending but still, I would recommend this film if you want to know what happened with the cat and mouse game that is the blind man and the burglars. It was just released today so you have a lot of time to see it in the theatres. Just don’t forget to breathe when you watch it or else.. 👀
