Morelli’s Gelato is a family-owned business that traces way back 1907 when it was first introduced in the UK by Giueseppe Morelli when he started selling it from the back of his bicycle. The Morelli family has been making ice cream for five generations to a trademark recipe after emigrating from Italy.
So before coming into the JBR branch of Morelli’s Gelato, I first did my research. I wanted to know what’s the difference between a gelato and the regular ice cream. And so I learned that Gelato is the Italian word for ice cream, so gelato and ice cream is arguably the same. However, the big difference lies between the soft, smooth texture and clean taste of gelato compared to American-style ice cream’s heavier, richer texture. It all comes down to these factors: fat, sugar, air and serving temperature.
Gelato has a more intense flavour than ice cream, since it has less cold fat that coats the tongue and gets in the way of tasting things. Gelato’s flavours come through directly and quickly then melt away, leaving a clean mouth. That also explains the higher price point compared to regular ice creams.
When I finally found the branch in JBR, I immediately noticed the clean interior and the elegant looking chandelier. The purple hues are very evident in all their furniture and branding. It’s a small store but they have comfy chairs. I had to emphasize this because we stayed for quite a bit as the gelato is best eaten inside the store.
I wanted to try their waffles and crepes so we ordered both before the ice cream. They tasted good and the waffle was crunchy and the crepe was cooked perfectly, not too doughy but just right.
We also tried the Summer Dream which is a Mango and Watermelon sorbet served with soft vanilla gelato and cream, topped with mango sauce and garnished with fresh mangoes, kiwi, watermelon and their biscuit wafer. This one is sweet and sour so it’s a bit different from the usual ice cream.
The Amore Cup is like the ice cream for couples. You get two flavors that you can share and it just looks pretty and tastes great too! One flavor is hazelnut and the other strawberry so it looks like a his and hers kind of gelato. I liked both but what I liked the most is the Morelli’s Bacio.
The Morelli’s Bacio is one of their bestsellers so I had to try this one. It’s chocolate, hazelnut and soft vanilla gelato served with a chocolate truffle, Piemonte hazelnuts, swirls of Magnum chocolate and hazelnut sauce in a chocolate cup and fresh whipped cream. This is the best for me and I will order this one again when I come back. Every ingredient in this cup complemented each other and I loved the right amount of sweetness in my mouth.
While I love the ambiance in the store, I also have to commend them for the service. You may place your order at the counter but they can also get your order for you at your table if you wish. I loved the efficiency and how they check up on customers if everything is ok. It was pretty busy when we came with a lot of people coming in and out of the store.
Overall, I really enjoyed my desserts overload experience at Morelli’s Gelato. I think the price although a bit higher than the regular ice cream parlors is reasonable for the quality of the product being served. The gelato is really good, the place is nice and clean and the staff are friendly. They don’t have WiFi though and I think aside from adding more flavors or more products in the menu, an additional WiFi connection too wouldn’t hurt. After all, I think aside from the amazing taste of the gelato, we also want to share how good it looks on Instagram. WiFi + Morelli’s Gelato? That’s sweet!
