Downtown Cafe is the newest hotspot located in one of the busiest streets in Karama. It’s kind of unusual to find this posh looking cafe in the middle of these streets because I am used to seeing just eateries and the almost identical looking cafeterias in this side of Dubai.
Thanks to the bright signages outside, the café is very easy to find. Before you even enter, you will already see the outdoor seating area which is a good place to hang out in this kind of weather.
But when you enter, it’s a whole new different ballgame. The interior looks great and I had a feeling as if I’m not in Karama. I even noticed that their couches and sofa resemble the same ones in the very elegant Vesna restaurant in Conrad Hotel Dubai.
Looking at the food menu, I saw that they have quite a selection of drinks and an array of dishes from all over the world. They offer International cuisine so it’s nice to see that they serve a little bit of the best of everything. We started with some appetizers to prepare ourselves for the mains.
We ordered their version of dynamite shrimps which is called crunchy cocktail shrimp, orly prawns, chicken sausage platter and cheese fries. I must say I liked the prawns but the rest of the appetizers were just average.
For the mains, we went for their DT Flakes & flames pasta, pizza, sea bass and steak. The pizza and the steak were ok.
They tasted good, not great, but the sea bass and the pasta were different. Although most of their food are spicy, I really liked the Flakes & Flames pasta. I would come back to this place just for this because they came up with a recipe that’s original and distinct from all the other that I’ve tried before.
For the desserts, I have to commend them on the killer shake. It was literally a killer shake because I don’t know how you can recover after devouring it.
We also tried some of their desserts like the chocolate Coke cake, strawberry cake and they were just ok.
When it comes to the service, I have to mention that the waiters weren’t very accommodating. It’s like they were just there to do their jobs and being friendly to customers isn’t in their job description, which was perfectly fine by me because I just need my food and my drink to be happy. Amiss, the restaurant manager was the complete opposite though because he was really courteous and friendly and made sure we have everything that we needed for the night.
To sum up, I did enjoy our dining experience at Downtown Cafe. With inexpensive but good tasting food in a place that makes you forget you’re actually in Karama, this is a great spot to chill and hang out. Add the vast selection of great tasting smoothies and shakes, never mind the service, and you’ll definitely enjoy your time here. I will no doubt come back if I’m ever in this side of Dubai, it is actually a good place, to be honest.
