YO! Sushi is the conveyor belt sushi concept that is said to be “Fast, Fun and Fresh”. According to their website, Sushi’s experience offers diners a choice of more than a 150 different Japanese-inspired dishes like sushi, sashimi and hot curries.
I first tried dining in their restaurant just last week during the Dubai Food Festival season. I wanted to try something light and fast so we opted for this restaurant. We visited the branch in IBN Battuta Mall and to be honest, I was attracted by the lights and thought that they were so bright, I felt like it shouted my name and I was hypnotized to enter.
I really liked the open kitchen concept and the conveyor belt system that looked like the ones in the airport, only smaller. It seemed as if diners were playing games as they waited for the food to reach the side of their tables. To be fair, the food were prepared fast enough after each order.
Their menu offered a lot of the Japanese classics and some new items that are not available in other Japanese restaurants. They have color coded the menu and the plates so it was kind of interesting to see how it plays out after you have placed your order. Prices were affordable but some of the items are a bit overpriced for what it’s worth. Anyhow, it is actually nice to know how much you’ll be paying just by looking at the plates.
When it comes to the food, I have to say that it was less than average. I didn’t really find a specific dish that wowed me or even impressed me the slightest. The quality of the food was something similar to a street food or a less expensive fast-food joint. I believe they need to make sure that they choose and use the best ingredients because at some point, I felt like I was eating at a canteen.
The staff were nice though and they were attentive and friendly. I think I took the longest time to order because I had no idea what to have during that night. Good thing they were really helpful and knowledgeable about their products.
To sum up, the overall experience was just ok. I left the restaurant feeling quite satisfied but not disappointed as well. It’s as I said, very average and if you’re expecting a really nice meal, this is not the place to go. I believe Yo Sushi is a perfect place for a quick Japanese food fix before you go see a movie or something to take away with you in the park. It’s good but there’s a lot of room for improvement and with a reengineered menu can definitely be better.
