I’ve been living in the UAE for 5 years now and I love it so much that I feel like I don’t really need to go out of the country to enjoy. I have a long list of places that I need to visit and most of the time, I just want to stay in a hotel and enjoy their facilities. This week, I thought of going to Abu Dhabi and check out one of the most famous hotels in the city, Grand Millennium Al Wahda.
Actually, the only reason I went here is because I’m stressed out and I need a massage and also, I have learned that they were promoting the Elemis treatments in their spa so I thought of trying it. And since I will be going to Abu Dhabi anyway, I decided why not stay in the hotel as well? I mean, it’s a long drive going back to Dubai and it will be a great time to experience life in Abu Dhabi even for a short time.
So one morning, I set off and drove to Abu Dhabi. The hotel was pretty easy to find as it was standing tall amidst all the other skyscrapers. It also helped that it was connected to one of the biggest shopping malls in the city. It was a breeze to check in and soon enough, I started exploring.
Their lobby looked nice but not as impressive as the ones in Dubai. The design borders on the modern and contemporary but I was more impressed in the other waiting area on the 24th floor where I stayed. Anyway, the overall feel of the hotel was nice and I think the guests were mostly business travelers and families.
I went to the room to put my things and I was amazed at how spacious and spotless it was. From here, there was a great view of the city and I like the small touch of personalization with the phone. The bed looked comfortable and I can’t wait to sleep on it that night.
The hotel is connected to the mall so you can easily go there when you want to roam around and buy something. They also have a gym, a few good and remarkable restaurants and bars, meeting rooms, and the spa.
I loved the treatment that I had and I would definitely recommend it to everyone. It was truly relaxing and it left me feeling revitalized. To read about the whole experience at the Zayna Spa, click here.
Anyway, I was able to try some of the restaurants inside the hotel. Al Wahda is the name of the all day dining restaurant and this is where guests come for dinner, lunch and breakfast if it’s included in their booking.
The design of the restaurant is very simple but the place is massive. The food was average and except for the freshly grilled items, I didn’t really enjoy it. The whole restaurant looked outdated with no ambiance whatsoever so me and my friend just ate and left and tried another restaurant.
We then went to Level One Bar & Lounge at the ground floor of the hotel. This one looked more modern with a bar, a billiards table, and some live entertainment too. During that night, they had a wine and cheese pairing and we tried and liked it.
They have quite a selection of wine and cheeses and as someone who loves cheese, I did enjoy it. The place was quiet even though there were a lot of people inside so we decided to go to the other bar downstairs.
We checked out the Porter’s Bar at the basement of the hotel and this one, I must say is what I liked the most. The place was buzzing, I loved the energy and the whole atmosphere and the band was really impressive.
They sang songs from my era so it’s nostalgic and they played their rendition of the current hits. I looked at the guests and saw that they were all just having fun. We ordered some drinks and some bar snacks and stayed for a while before heading to the other bar at the top of the hotel. I love Porter’s and I’m already thinking of coming back soon with more friends.
It was late at night around 11:30 when we checked out the Sky Lounge on the 31st floor. When you think about the name, you would have thought that it would be open air but to our surprise, it’s not.
From here, you can see the whole Abu Dhabi skyline from the windows but it was not cozy enough for us. What I mean is, the area was enclosed and space was too wide and the lights were just too bright. When you look up, you just see the roof and it felt like drinking in the daytime. There was a DJ but the crowd was just not into the music that was being played. I would suggest a better playlist and possibly revamping the furniture and bring in couches instead of benches with cushions.
Because as the place suggests, people should be able to lounge (lie, sit, or stand in a relaxed or lazy way) and you can’t just do that with a normal chair. I believe the lounge bars and spots in Dubai are successful because they have furniture that allows their guests to lounge around complemented with great food and drinks.
It has been a long day and we went back to our room. It’s a good thing that the bed was huge and absolutely comfortable and when I laid down, it felt like I’m sleeping on the clouds and it was so relaxing. The sheets were very clean and smelled fresh too so I had one of the most peaceful sleep ever. I woke up feeling energized and had breakfast and went to the pool.
Their pool, like other rooftop pools, had a depth of about 4 or 5 feet. It’s just enough for someone to take a dip and enjoy the sun. They also had a bar beside the pool where you can order some drinks and snacks.
I loved the view from the rooftop pool and I did enjoy swimming and just sitting back and relaxing on the lounger. I reckoned taking a break from time to time really does wonder to one’s self.
To sum up, I genuinely had a nice staycation at Grand Millennium Al Wahda. The hotel is nice although there’s a lot of room for improvement especially now that a lot of newer hotels are being built by the day. I extremely loved the fast internet connection, the service from the reception to the restaurants to the spa to the valet parking.
If I would be asked if I will recommend it or not, I would definitely say yes but that’s a yes with a hope that the management comes up with new and innovative ideas that will make the tourists and the residents come back for more.
