Cho Gao, Crowne Plaza Abu Dhabi

If there was something lacking in the UAE, it would probably be the abundance of Asian restaurants to choose from. I am certainly a fan of Asian food and to know that Cho Gao is around is such a great relief. Cho Gao which means “Rice Market” in Vietnamese, is a re-imagining of the classic Asian restaurant.

It’s a 21st-century eatery combined with the creativity, energy and senses of ancient Asian culture. If you ever get to try the food at Cho Gao, I’m sure that the experience will be an adventurous culinary journey through Asia with a menu that takes its inspiration from the bordering countries.

We got to visit the restaurant one Friday afternoon. When we entered, I immediately liked the ambiance and the vibe because I like restaurants that are decorated to match the cuisine and so it’s not just a culinary journey, you also get to feel like you’re transported to the actual country. The atmosphere is very relaxed and inviting and they cleverly combined a contemporary chic bar to compliment the restaurant’s casual dining style.

When I checked the menu, they have this Taste of Japan promo where of course they present the best of what the country has to offer. You can see the usual sushi, sashimi, salad and noodles and so we made sure we are able to try those.

We also ordered from their regular menu because we were craving for some authentic Asian food such as the classic dumpling and siomai.

We ordered more food because they were just really good. We tried the chicken inside the “pillow”. It’s basically sizzling chicken inside a foil packaging. They did this to retain all the flavors inside and it was very tasty, to be honest. It was kind of nostalgic too because it tasted like something that we only have in the Philippines.

After trying the food, I must say that I am very impressed. From the presentation to the texture to the actual taste, I was really happy and satisfied. I’m already thinking of coming back sometime soon even if we haven’t finished our food yet. It’s so good that I am willing to drive all the way to Abu Dhabi from Dubai whenever I’m craving for some Asian goodness.

Aside from the mains, I was also happy with the drinks that they have. We ordered the lime and strawberry margarita and they tasted exactly as what I had in mind. I also have to mention that they have a happy hour offer with selected drinks at 50% off from 12pm-7pm. I believe that’s a really good offer and that itself warrants a visit.

I also have to mention that the staff was extremely nice and attentive. Not once did we have a problem asking for something that we needed. Someone was always there to check on us and asked if we wanted anything else. I think they genuinely liked their jobs and it showed.

We ended our unique Asian experience with the super sweet chocolate ball dessert. I have seen this a thousand times before (and you probably did as well) but I never get tired of it. It’s always a nice experience and I’m fascinated when they do it in front of you. The bonus part is, it tasted good.

Overall, I unquestionably enjoyed the Asian experience at Cho Gao and I’m so glad I tried it finally. From the furniture to the decor to the excellent service to the food and drinks and desserts and reasonable prices, I didn’t find any fault in it so I was delighted. It is just the perfect escape from the working day and I believe it is one of the must-visit destinations in Abu Dhabi.

They have also introduced the new Taste of Asia Brunch where you can enjoy award-winning cuisine with their sharing starters featuring hot and cold delicacies served to your table and the main course from Chef’s special bowls. Of course, you can finish off with the delicious dessert buffet and all this is priced at just AED 200 including iced tea & water. If you want to opt for AED 300 package, it includes house grape, brew, spirits, and cocktails. The brunch is on every Friday & Saturday from 12pm4pm
