Loca is an award-winning Mexican restaurant and bar with branches across the UAE. It’s a new concept in Mexican dining and drinking with the menu boasting some authentic dishes from all over that part in Latin America.
I have to admit I’m really a fan of Mexican food and I did set high expectations for this one. I’ve learned that they recently launched their own brunch so I thought of trying it since lately I have been going to similar restaurants offering the same cuisines.
So one Friday afternoon, we decided to take a road trip to Abu Dhabi to visit the newest branch of Loca. It was located inside the Galleria Mall and was very easy to find. When we entered, I loved the airy, relaxed atmosphere because of the abundance of light and space. The dining area just near the entrance had dim lighting but the main area was superb and we really liked the setup of the whole restaurant and its masculine feel.
The brunch includes unlimited appetizers and you can choose one main course from the selection. You may also opt for the alcohol package which was reasonably priced. And speaking of alcohol, I was fascinated by the bar because it was huge and I have learned that the key feature of the design is the “Heineken Extreme Draught” beer concept where they bring the beer tap from behind the bar to the table top. I wonder how many people can sit at once in the bar, though? But it was a cool concept, nonetheless.
Anyway, to start with, they offered us this fresh guacamole prepared in front of the guests. You can choose the spice level and for someone who doesn’t like anything spicy, I have to say I loved this one and it complemented the tacos really well.
Then they served the appetizers and there was a lot to choose from. You can make your own and they just give you the ingredients and you can prepare it as you wish. I liked that idea because at least you can choose which ingredients go into your taco.
They also served this soft tacos with egg and the omelet with beef. It took us a while to finish all this but they were absolutely delicious.
In between all this, we ordered margaritas. A lot of them to be honest because as we tried one flavor, we just wanted more. Just for the margaritas alone, I felt that it’s well worth the extra money that you pay to upgrade to the alcohol package. When it was time to order the main course, we were already full so I just opted for the lighter option, Shrimp Salad and my friend tried Loca’s ribs.
Much to our surprise, the shrimp salad was not light. It was huge and was definitely tasty. I thought I was already full but it was good, I was able to finish it.
Even the ribs were good. The slow roasted beef short ribs were so tender, the meat was literally just falling off the bones. I don’t know how else I can describe how good the food was but yes, it was amazing.
The desserts didn’t disappoint either so we ended our brunch on a high note. The staff was also attentive and kept refilling our glasses and asked if we wanted something else. We stayed for a long time in the restaurant because the place was just cozy and the weather was pleasant during this time.
Although they didn’t have a live band or any other entertainment of sorts, we did enjoy the brunch because of how relaxed it was. The soothing and chill playlist that they have on more than made up for the lack of activity.
To sum up, I would describe this brunch as a fun, laid-back, casual one. You should visit for the great food, amazing drinks, unblemished service and the overall atmosphere. I can’t say anything else but Loca just had me wanting more. It’s so good, I left feeling satisfied, happy and already planning when to come back again.
