You know what I like about restaurants in Dubai? It’s that they take the interior design game seriously and they always make it a point to ensure that diners are transported to another place even for a few hours.
That is exactly what Trader Vic’s is all about. For a good 3 hours, we felt like we went to Hawaii and experienced their culture and of course, the food.
Entering Trader Vic’s is a whole different experience. Everywhere there is an intricate piece, a distinct decor or a Tiki statue. Think Indiana Jones, think Hawaii, think tropical, that’s how I would describe it. It’s like escaping the hustle and bustle of the city for a while.
We started with some cocktails from their exotic but extensive cocktail menu. It’s amazing how they serve it in this cool tiki cups and glasses and that just added to the authenticity of the place. The drinks are so good that we had around 6 of them. Looking at the bar, I saw a lot of customers that looked like regulars. I’m assuming that the restaurant is actually popular for the concoctions more than the food.
But we did visit in time for dinner so we were very much looking forward to the food. We started with some Tempura calamari and the spicy tuna tartare. I loved the calamari but since I’m not a fan of Wasabi, I didn’t like the dip.
I wish they have an alternative to that as I think something else would have complemented the calamari better. The tuna tartare was perfect and can’t really say anything about it. It’s a must-try if you’re a first timer like me.
For the mains, we ordered the Paper Thin Fillet Flambé and Crispy duck roll. We were in for a treat as it was prepared right before us. The whole process took only a few minutes but they definitely put on a show with all the fire and effects. And yes, it tasted great as well.
We also tried the crispy duck roll. It basically looks like this in the beginning until the waiter slices it into pieces and they serve it with this piping hot thinly sliced pancakes.
It’s simply delicious and the fact that you can make your own roll adds to the excitement. The sauce was like the icing on the cake as it really was the perfect accompaniment to the duck.
In between all the food and drinks, we were treated to some live entertainment by a live band and it’s also nice to see some customers dancing to the tunes. Overall, it’s a fun night, very chilled and laid back where everyone can just relax and enjoy themselves.
When it comes to the service, I have no complaints at all. They were very courteous and were regularly checking up on us but not in an annoying way. The dishes and the drinks are also reasonably priced and I believe is definitely worth your money.
To sum up, I know I’m late to the party when it comes to trying out Trader Vic’s but I’m glad that I finally went there last night. I am sure it won’t be the last time as I really enjoyed the experience. They recently did minor refurbishments and renovation so I’m sure new and old customers will appreciate that. I genuinely liked it and will undoubtedly recommend it to my friends and colleagues and to essentially anyone looking for great food + exceptional drinks and fantastic entertainment.
